Celebrating the Long Weekend & a New Beginning

Happy Memorial Day weekend! The weather was gorgeous today and it seemed like everyone was outside enjoying it. In addition to celebrating the holiday this weekend, we had another reason to have a little fun: Ty got a job! It's been a tough 6 months in the job search arena for him, although he did a few side jobs here and there and I thoroughly enjoyed having a house husband for a while, but I know he was going a little crazy hanging around the house all day with the cats. Even though they make it look so easy...

Last night we decided to head out on our evening walk and grab dinner & a drink or two. One restaurant that is fast becoming our favorite place to go in PBis Zanzibar Cafe. We've been there for lunch, I've met a friend for wine, and now we've had dinner there and we like it a little more each time we go. It's very open, has a laid back atmosphere, great food, and even though it's right smack in the middle of the PB bars we try to avoid, it's never really crowded or loud. I hear they have an amazing breakfast menu and good coffee so we'll be trying that soon I'm sure.

Last night I also found a new reason to love Zanzibar...

Fox Barrel Apricot Pear Cider....yes, it is as good as it sounds. I'm not a beer drinker, which is tough because San Diego is very much a beer city, but I've found that cider is also fairly popular and I really like it. This one is not at all sweet and the apricot is subtle. Along with our drinks we split one of their pizzas (which are sort of an appetizer size) and their chicken and black bean quesadilla. Both were really good, you can tell they use fresh ingredients and put some time into their food.

They also have an AMAZING dessert case!

That would be a peanut butter blondie. Served warm with fresh whipped cream. All sorts of delicious.Overall, we love Zanzibar Cafe. It's a little gem right in the middle of PB, highly recommend it!

We continued our weekend celebration today with a long walk along the bay in Crown Point. There were a ton of people out grilling which made us hungry for some typical grill food, but we don't have a grill. We decided on brats and after a little Google-ing, I ended up cooking them in a pan with a little bit of beer. Somehow I did not mess them up.

I was really nervous I would under-cook them, so for the majority of the time I kept the lid on the pan so they'd steam through, then I let them brown up with the lid off.

We couldn't grill out, but we could eat out on our balcony and at least pretend.

I took the easy way out on the side dishes, mac & cheese and mashed potatoes from Von's prepared food section. Healthy? Not in the least. Delicious? Absolutely.

We're wrapping up the night with a movie (hopefully we can find something decent on Netflix!) and wine. Tomorrow Ty will enjoy his last day as a house husband before he starts his new job, maybe I'll even give him a break on the housework :)

Hope you had a great weekend!

  1. Sounds like a great weekend. Congrats on the hubby's job!!! That always erases so much stress. We didn't have a grill either...but we just went out and bought one of those mini $15 ones at wal-mart. Looks good cooked w/beer!

    1. Thank you! He started today and I think he's really going to enjoy it :) We're still debating getting a small grill for our balcony, but the pan worked fine for these.
